ARTIST STATEMENT
I explore culture by creating sculptural artifacts from imagined civilizations. These artifacts are mixed media 3D forms constructed primarily with clay, fiberglass and acrylic paint. I sculpt my forms in clay; some remain clay, others become a mold for fiberglass. Once the form is complete, I apply acrylic paint and may add other material elements. I use definitive forms with bold color and line while exploring textural surfaces.
I am fascinated by culture and the human experience, especially that of pre-industrial and non-western societies. In addition to art history, I am interested in cultural anthropology and archeology. These studies have allowed me to analyze the similarities and differences between peoples around the world and the objects they create.
My stylistic evolution has been influenced by various styles and cultures -yet is unique unto itself. I am developing my own culture, with a definitive visual style. This conceptual approach allows more creative freedom and explores an awareness of both cultural diversity and human similarity. I am fascinated with the narrative of cultural and individual experiences as seen through functional and ceremonial objects. I create artifacts, because they are a part of life, rather than a depiction of it.
BIO
Kristi Backman earned her BFA at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and her MA at the University of Montana at Missoula. Her artwork is part of several private collections and she shows her work in a variety of regional and national exhibitions.
Kristi Backman is an artist, creativity coach, art instructor, author, and speaker. She is a professional artist with a Master's in Fine Art and a certified Magnetic Coach®. Kristi also has over 18 years of experience teaching studio art and art history at the collegiate level. Kristi is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience with other creatives, to inspire and guide their artistic journey. You can find Kristi creating in her studio in Aurora, Colorado, hanging with her dog, reading a good book, or exploring nature.
